Black skin is a type of human skin color that has an abundance of melanin pigments. Having dark skin reduces the risk of sun damage, but people with dark skin are also prone to acne because they tend to have oily skin. Blackheads are very common and affect nearly everyone at some point in their lives. It occurs when a sebaceous gland becomes inflamed as a result of clogged pores.

What Are Blackheads

Blackheads are small bumps that appear on your skin due to clogged hair follicles. These bumps are called blackheads because the surface looks dark or black. Blackheads are a mild type of acne that usually forms on the face, but they can also appear on the following body parts:

  • back
  • chest
  • neck
  • arms
  • shoulders

Blackheads also called comedones to occur mainly in people with oily skin, although anyone can get them. 

Blackheads form when a hair follicle in the skin becomes clogged or plugged when a combination of Dead skin cells and excess oil from the sebaceous gland collects at the follicle’s opening, thereby producing a bump. If the skin over the bump opens, air exposure causes the plug to look black, thus forming a blackhead.

Causes of Blackheads

  • Accumulation of dead skin cells
  • Secretion of excess oil by the sebaceous gland which is available all through the body thereby clogging pores and hair follicle.
  • Changes in the human body hormones during puberty, menstruation or while taking birth control pills.
  • Build up of propionibacterium acne bacteria on the skin. Propionibacterium acnes is the most abundant bacterium on human skin, particularly in sebaceous areas. It is a part of normal human flora.
  • Genetics: Teenage and adult who have a history of acne in the family are more likely develop it. 
  • Smoking: snokers  are more likely to have adult acne.
  • Medications: Certain medications like steroids, antidepressants and some drugs for epilepsy can trigger acne flare-ups. 

How To Get Rid of Blackheads

Depending on the severity of acne on your skin. If the acne is not too severe, over-the-counter medication or home medication can be used to get rid of them. But in severe cases, a visit to the doctor is recommended before applying any medication. The following can be used to get rid of acne on the skin;

  • Use products that contain salicylic acid: This ingredient dissolves the keratin that causes clogged pores.Salicylic acid may help unclog pores and prevent new breakouts.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide reduces the number of bacteria that can cause blackheads and whiteheads to form.It is recommended to start with a little amount of benzoyl peroxide gel or cream to prevent skin irritation or dryness. The product should be applied once or twice a day after cleaning the affected area.
  • Apply retinoid creams and lotion to affected area: This works by removing dead cells from the surface of the skin, which may help unclog pores and hair follicles. It should be applied at night after cleaning the affected akin surface.
  • Azelaic acid and nicotinamide, also known as niacinamide has been found effective in the treatment of acne. Azelaic acid kills micro-organisms on the skin and reduces the swelling. It is contained in wheat,rye,barley and a wide variety of grains.
  • Use antibiotics: This may help kill bacteria on the skin, but I should be used only for consistently however, to keep the bacteria from developing drug resistance.
  • Oral medication: A doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics, in combination with topical treatments.

  • Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil can prevent or stop the growth of bacteria. Apply a small amount of tea tree oil to a cotton swab and rub it on the affected area.
  • Sugar or salt scrubs:  Application of sugar and salt scrubs helps exfoliate/remove dead cells on the surface of your skin. Wet your face, apply a salt or sugar scrub to your affected areas and massage your skin in small, circular motions for up to 30 seconds. Rinse your face with water when you’re finished.
  • Green tea: Green tea is an antioxidant however, it’s wet leaves can help reduce oil production in your skin.  Apply the wet leave on the affected area and massage into your skin in small, circular motions for up to 30 seconds. Rinse your face with water after the process. .
  • Also, zinc supplements may reduce the appearance of acne. A study was conducted and it was found that people who take zinc supplements had a significant reduction in their acne. However since supplements should not be taken without a doctor’s prescription.
  • Meanwhile, some small studies have found that a low-glycemic diet may help reduce acne. Eating more low-glycemic foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, when possible helps to level out sugar in the blood thereby reducing the amount of sebum, or oil, that the body produces.

Prevention of Blackheads

  • wash you face when you wake up in the morning,before bed and after sweating.
  • Use alcohol free skin products
  • Avoid scrubbing face with washcloths and sponges as this can cause skin irritation.
  • Avoid touching the face regularly as this can transfer the dirt on the hand to the face thereby  increasing the risk of blackheads.
  • Change pillowcase often. As the dirt on the pillow can get transferred to the face on contact while sleeping.
  • Avoid oil based and alcohol based cleansers.
  • Avoid sleeping with make up left overnight.
  • Choose products labeled “noncomedogenic,” which means that they will not clog pores.
  • Avoid using cocoa butter, which can clog pores and cause acne.
  • Cleanse the skin gently, using a mild cleanser and a clean towel to lightly pat the skin dry.
  • Wash hats and sports equipment frequently to remove the buildup of sweat, dirt, and oil.
  • Avoid trying to pop or squash blackheads. You may end up causing painful irritation to the skin and introducing more bacteria into the opening causing the acne to become more inflamed and spread. The skin is sensitive so trying to use your nails to remove blackheads applies pressure to the skin which can cause serious irritation or scarring.
  • Avoid eating fatty foods, junk foods and too much fried food such as white bread, potato chips, and fries. They contain more oil and you want to reduce the amount of oil secreted by your glands.and eating more low-glycemic foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, when possible. Leveling out blood sugar in this way may reduce the amount of sebum, or oil, that the body produces.


Blackheads have no permanent health effect but it affects the physical and psychological appearance of some individuals. Keloid scarring and hyperpigmentation are one of the effects of severe acne. No matter how small it may seem, blackheads shouldn’t be left untreated. Most of the treatments are safe, but they should be used with caution.

Before considering a suitable treatment option, factors such as age, sex, and the severity of the acne should be put into consideration. Likewise, it should be known that these treatments don’t work overnight, but consistent use can give the desired result.
